Hari ini, kita memperingati hari raya Kemuliaan Kudus. Dari Injil hari ini, kita mengetahui bahwa orang-orang yang tidak berdosa ini adalah bayi laki-laki di Betlehem yang dibantai oleh tentara Herodes Agung. Setelah tertipu oleh orang-orang Majus, Herodes sangat marah dan memutuskan untuk membunuh semua anak laki-laki, dengan harapan bisa memusnahkan bayi Yesus. Diperingatkan oleh malaikat Gabriel, Yusuf membawa Maria dan bayi Yesus, dan melarikan diri ke Mesir. Namun, sayangnya, bayi-bayi lain yang tidak bersalah gagal melepaskan diri dari murka dan kekejaman Herodes.<\/div>\n

Sejak awal pasal kedua injil Matius, kita menemukan bagaimana Herodes adalah gila dan tanpa ampun. Ambisinya untuk tetap berkuasa menghancurkan semua hal lainnya. Dari sumber-sumber tertulis lainnya, Herodes sangat gila dengan kekuasaan, bahwa dia melakukan pembunuhan terhadap istri dan beberapa anaknya sendiri, untuk mengamankan takhtanya sebagai Raja Israel. Tidak heran saat dia mengetahui bahwa raja yang baru lahir dari garis keturunan Daud, lahir di Betlehem, dia akan melakukan apapun untuk menghancurkan Yesus, sebuah ancaman nyata bagi takhtanya. Awalnya, dia berencana untuk menemukan Yesus melalui pertolongan orang Majus, namun ketika orang Majus mengetahui rencana jahat Herodes, mereka melarikan diri dari Herodes. Raja Herodes menjadi sangat marah, dan dalam keputusasaannya, dia memerintahkan pembunuhan bayi tak berdaya yang tak terhitung jumlahnya. Pastinya, dia tidak akan merasakan penyesalan karena ini hanya pembunuhan lain dan segala cara dibenarkan demi tahtanya.<\/div>\n

Mengingat kanak-kanak suci berarti kita mengingat semua bayi dan anak-anak yang menjadi korban kekerasan. Ada banyak bentuk kekerasan: aborsi, pekerja anak, kekerasan dalam rumah tangga, intimidasi, kemiskinan, putus sekolah, kurang gizi dan banyak lainnya. Seperti pada zaman Yesus, kekerasan ini diabadikan oleh Herodes Herodes zaman modern. Inilah orang-orang yang terikat pada ambisi mereka untuk mendapatkan uang, kesenangan, dan kesuksesan, bahwa yang lain, termasuk anak-anak kecil, hanyalah pion untuk dikorban. Mengingat kanak-kanak suci yang tidak berdosa berarti juga kita melindungi anak-anak kita dari Herodes-Herodes yang baru. Kita mungkin mulai memeriksa diri kita sendiri: “Apakah kita memperlakukan orang lain terutama anak-anak dengan kebaikan dan cinta? Apakah kita melihat orang lain, terutama anak-anak, seperti citra Tuhan, yang mampu tumbuh dan mencintai? Apakah kita berkontribusi terhadap pertumbuhan dan perkembangan anak-anak kita? “<\/div>\n

Today, we are commemorating the feast of the Holy Innocents. From today\u2019s Gospel, we learn that these Holy Innocents are the baby boys in Bethlehem who are slaughtered by the army of Herod the Great. After being deceived by the Magi, Herod is furious and decides to kill all the young male boys, hoping that he may also annihilate the baby Jesus. Warned by the angel, Joseph brings Mary and baby Jesus, and escapes to Egypt. Yet, unfortunately, other innocent babies fail to escape the wrath and utter cruelty of Herod.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As early as chapter 2 of Matthew, we discover how mad and merciless Herod is. His ambition to stay in power eclipses all other things. From other ancient sources, Herod is so insane with power, that he commissions the murders of his own wives and sons, as to secure his throne as the King of Israel. No wonder when he learns that newly born king from the line of David, was born in Bethlehem, he will do anything to destroy Jesus, a real threat to his throne. Initially, he plans to find Jesus through the help of the Magi, but when the Magi are aware of Herod\u2019s evil plan, they run away from Herod. The mad King gets so angry, and in his desperate move, he orders the killing of countless defenseless babies. Surely, he will not feel any remorse because it is just another killing spree and any means is justified for the sake of his throne.<\/div>\n

Remembering the Holy Innocents means that we remember all babies and children who become the victims of violence. They are many forms of violence: abortion, child-labor, domestic violence, bullying, poverty, and many others. As in the time of Jesus, these violence are perpetuated by the modern-day Herods. These are those men and women who are attached to their ambitions for money, pleasure, and success, that the others, including the little children, are mere pawns to sacrifice. Remembering the Holy Innocents means also we protect our children from the new Herods. We may begin examining ourselves: \u201cDo we treat others especially children with kindness and love? Do we see others, especially children, as the image of God, capable of growing and loving? Do we contribute to the growth and development of our children?\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
