Perbuatan tangan Tuhan dalam bacaan pertama hari ini sungguh luar biasa. Ketika Paulus dan Silas sedang mewadahkan pujian kepada Allah dari dalam penjara, tiba-tiba terjadi gempa bumi, jeruji-jeruji penjara seketika juga goyah, pintu-pintu terbuka, dan belenggu para tahanan lepas semua. Reaksi kepala penjara saat itu adalah merasa bertanggung jawab penuh akan lepasnya para tahanan yang dijaganya, sehingga ia bersedia bunuh diri. Ketakutannya akan amarah para pemimpin agama dan umat Yahudi bisa juga menjadi salah satu pertimbangannya. Mungkin ia sendiri akan dijatuhi hukuman mati. Daripada membiarkan orang lain berkuasa akan nyawanya, setidaknya dengan bunuh diri ia sendiri yang memutuskan nasibnya.
Tiba-tiba teriakan Paulus mengentikan ayunan pedangnya. Ia menyangka bahwa setelah kejadian itu semua tahanan pasti langsung melarikan diri. Tapi Paulus dan Silas tetap bertahan di dalam, bisa jadi karena mendapat firasat dari Tuhan untuk menunggu. Sikap sang kepala penjara langsung berubah, ketakutannya sekarang lebih pada Tuhan daripada pada manusia lain. Ia meminta petunjuk Paulus supaya ia pun bisa diselamatkan dan menjadi satu dengan Allah.
Kita manusia memang lebih mudah untuk takut pada sesuatu yang di depan mata kita: takut akan tidak naik pangkat, takut diputus hubungan oleh sang kekasih, takut tidak dianggap anak oleh orang tua, takut tidak dihormati oleh anak, takut tidak disukai orang lain, dan macam-macam lainnya. Hari ini kita diingatkan untuk menggunakan karunia Roh Kudus yang meluruskan prioritas kita. Takut pada Tuhan bukan berarti kita menjalankan perintahNya karena kita takut dihukum atau dikirim ke neraka. Takut pada Tuhan membuat kita berani mengambil tindakan yang kita tahu sesuai dengan kehendak Tuhan, walaupun dengan konsekuensi dibenci oleh orang lain, kehilangan status, atau hal duniawi lainnya. Dengan demikian, takut akan Tuhan tidak lain adalah keyakinan bahwa Tuhan membela kita dalam memperjuangkan kebenaran.

Bacaan-bacaan Injil minggu ini diambil dari bagian Injil Yohanes di mana Yesus memberikan wejangan terakhir pada para muridnya, di mana Ia menjanjikan akan mengirimkan Roh Kudus setelah Dia meninggalkan dunia. Gereja sengaja memilih bacaan-bacaan ini karena kita semakin mendekati Hari Raya Pentekosta. Bacaan dari Kisah Para Rasul tentang perjalanan misi Santo Paulus juga bisa dilihat dari 7 macam karunia Roh Kudus yang diajarkan Gereja.
Dalam bacaan hari ini kita menyaksikan Paulus yang masih bersemangat menyebarkan kabar sukacita tentang Yesus kepada umat Yahudi. Ia berhenti di sebuah sinagog dan berbicara kepada perempuan-perempuan Yahudi di sana. Tidak semua langsung percaya pada kotbahnya. Dikatakan hanya seorang perempuan bernama Lidia yang percaya. Lidia dideskripsikan sebagai seorang yang “beribadah kepada Allah,” atau dengan kata lain, orang yang saleh. Ketika dia percaya kepada kata-kata Paulus, dia tidak bertindak dengan kekuatan sendiri, tetapi karena “Tuhan membuka hatinya.” Kemampuannya untuk menerima sabda Allah melalui Paulus adalah karunia Allah Roh Kudus.
Dari kisah Lidia kita bisa belajar bahwa kehidupan yang saleh, yang penuh dengan ibadah dan doa, akan menjadikan diri kita tempat yang subur untuk karya karunia Roh Kudus. Dari sinilah kita bisa lebih mengenali kehadiran Tuhan dalam hidup kita, melalui orang lain, ataupun dalam kejadian-kejadian di sekitar kita dan melalui ciptaan Tuhan yang lain. Di dalam dunia yang sepertinya penuh dengan hal-hal yang buruk, semoga kita bisa semakin jeli mengenali bahkan sepercik pun cahaya Kristus di tengah kegelapan.
We are living in the part of the world that violence and death have become our daily consumption. Every day, people’s lives are forcibly snatched away for unbelievably trivial reasons. Parents kill their babies. Brothers murder their brothers. Friends manipulate and sell their friends. Some of us used to go down on the street and cry for justice. Yet, many of us are just busy with daily pressing concerns like works, study and chores. We become numb or blind to the soil that has been painted red by the blood of our brothers and sisters. The life, precious in the eyes of God, turns out to be cheap at the hands of men.
However, few days ago, I was deeply troubled by the news of a young priest brutally murdered. His name is Fr. Mark Ventura, and he was just 37 years old when he was merciless gunned down. His life was taken moments after he celebrated his morning mass in Cagayan, Philippines. He was still inside the small chapel, had given his blessing to children and suddenly, an unidentified man shot him. His advocacy for justice and peace in his place may be the reason why he lived so short.
His death is less dramatic than of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador. The holy bishop was killed right after consecration of the body and blood of Christ, and he fell to the ground, his blood was mingled with the blood of Christ. Another bishop, a Dominican Bishop Pierre Claverie, OP of Oran, Algeria suffered the same fate. The terrorists planted a bomb in his car, and its explosion did not only kill Bishop Pierre, but also his young Muslim friend and driver. In a bloody scene, his flesh was mixed with the flesh of his Muslim friend. Yet, that is beside the point. Witnessing Fr. Mark’s body laying soulless on the ground and soaked with blood, is not only deeply disturbing, but is also deeply hurtful. It is enormously disturbing because it gives us the chilling effect that if these evil men could mercilessly kill a priest, the herald of forgiveness and mercy, now they may kill anyone who stands on their way. Yet, his death is also painful because his death is also our death as the People of God. His white soutane soiled and colored by blood, is our white garment we wore during our baptism. His lifeless hands used to bless the people and consecrate the holy hosts and wine, are also our hands that raise our children and build our society. His silenced mouth used to proclaim the Good News, to forgive sins, and to denounce evil, are also our mouth that receive the Holy Communion and teach wisdom to our children. The murder of Fr. Mark is a murder of a priest, and symbolically it is the killing of all of us, Christians.
The way of the priesthood is what some of us choose, the way that often provides us with earthly comforts, and unexpected bonuses; the way that catapults us from a rug to a rich kid; and the way that showers us with fame, success, and glory. Yet, it is the same way that confronts us with the face of evil; the way that challenges us to be at the side of the victims and to denounce injustice; and the way that gets us persecuted, mocked and killed. The choice is ours. To end my humble reflection, let me quote Archbishop Oscar Romero, “A church that doesn’t provoke any crises, a gospel that doesn’t unsettle, a word of God that doesn’t get under anyone’s skin, a word of God that doesn’t touch the real sin of the society in which it is being proclaimed — what gospel is that?”
18. “Jikalau dunia membenci kamu, ingatlah bahwa ia telah lebih dahulu membenci Aku dari pada kamu.
19. Sekiranya kamu dari dunia, tentulah dunia mengasihi kamu sebagai miliknya. Tetapi karena kamu bukan dari dunia, melainkan Aku telah memilih kamu dari dunia, sebab itulah dunia membenci kamu.
20. Ingatlah apa yang telah Kukatakan kepadamu: Seorang hamba tidaklah lebih tinggi dari pada tuannya. Jikalau mereka telah menganiaya Aku, mereka juga akan menganiaya kamu; jikalau mereka telah menuruti firman-Ku, mereka juga akan menuruti perkataanmu.
21. Tetapi semuanya itu akan mereka lakukan terhadap kamu karena nama-Ku, sebab mereka tidak mengenal Dia, yang telah mengutus Aku.
Banyak orang ingin sekali membaharui dunia dengan sekian banyak ide-ide brilian dan canggih. Mereka ingin membuat dunia semakin adil, semakin baik dan semakin indah. Intensi mereka untuk membangun dunia yang lebih indah dan lebih ideal tentu tidak salah. Namun kadang-kadang orang lupa bahwa perubahan hanya bisa terjadi ketika orang menyadari bahwa sesungguhnya Tuhanlah yang menginginkan perubahan ke arah yang lebih positif terjadi dalam dunia. Tuhan menciptakan manusia supaya manusia dengan kesadaran moral dan nuraninya, manusia dengan kesadaran bahwa dia sesungguhnya berasal dari Allah mesti pula berusaha untuk membangun dunia berdasarkan cinta Allah yang dikaruniakan kepada dirinya.
Hari ini dalam Injil-Nya, Yesus mengatakan: “Sekiranya kamu dari dunia, tentulah dunia mengasihi kamu sebagai miliknya. Tetapi karena kamu bukan dari dunia, melainkan Aku telah memilih kamu dari dunia, sebab itulah dunia membenci kamu.” Mencintai Yesus kadang-kadang mesti berarti bahwa kita berusaha untuk berpikir seperti Yesus berpikir, bersikap seperti Yesus berpikir, bertindak seperti Yesus bertindak dan mencintai seperti Yesus mencintai. Uskup Robert Baron menjelaskan ini dalam sebuah permenungannya tentang Prapaska.
Dan menjadi seperti Yesus kadang-kadang tidak selalu disukai dan tidak menjadi favorit. Selama hidup-Nya, Yesus tidak pernah menjadi tokoh favorit para ahli-ahli Taurat dan Orang-orang Farisi dan Saduki. Yesus kadang-kadang menantang semua jenis kesalehan-kesalehan yang dibuat-buat dan palsu. Yesus menentang setiap bentuk kejahatan yang diselubungi dengan intensi-intensi tersembunyi. Yesus mengampuni dosa-dosa para pendosa, pemungut cukai, pelacur, penjahat di atas kayu salib. Yesus menyukai mereka yang bertobat sungguh-sungguh namun Yesus menghardik mereka yang mau menciptakan diri seakan-akan saleh namun sebenarnya penuh dengan maksud-maksud terselubung yang sesat. Yesus menghardik mereka bukan karena membenci mereka namun dia mau agar mereka menjadi sejati dalam kesaksian hidupnya yang benar dan bukan dibuat-buat dan penuh polesan.
Mengikuti Yesus itu tidak selalu mudah karena banyak kali kita ditantang untuk terus merubah diri dan mentransformasi diri. Namun Yesus senantiasa ingin mengingatkan kita bahwa menjadi orang yang disukai Allah itu selalu jauh lebih mulia menjadi orang yang disukai manusia namun penuh dengan tipu muslihat dan kepalsuan. Pepatah Rusia pernah mengatakan: “It is better to be slapped by the truth, than to be kissed with a lie.” Lebih ditampar oleh kebenaran dan menjadi sadar, daripada dicium oleh kepalsuan dan larut dalam mekanisme menipu diri. Saya dan Anda sekalian diberi pilihan. Seorang hamba yang setia tidak pernah dapat mengabdi kepada dua Tuan. Amin.

John 15:18-21
You do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.
Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me”
Many people are eager to renew the world with so many brilliant and sophisticated ideas. They want to make the world more just, much better and more beautiful. Their intention to build a more beautiful and more ideal world is certainly not wrong. But sometimes people forget that change can only happen when people realize that it is God who wants a more positive change going on in the world. God created man so that man with his moral conscience (con-sins), man with the awareness that he really comes from God must also seek to build the world based on the love of God bestowed upon him.
Today in his Gospel, Jesus says: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as his own. But because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, that is why the world hates you.
“Loving Jesus sometimes means that we try to think as Jesus thinks, acts like Jesus acts and loves like Jesus loves. Bishop Robert Baron explained this in a reflection on Lent 2018. And being like Jesus is not always liked and not a favorite choice. During his lifetime, Jesus was never a favorite figure of the scribes and Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus sometimes challenged all kinds of pseudo-fabricated and false piety. Jesus opposed every form of crime covered with hidden intentions. Jesus forgave the sins of sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes, criminals on the cross. Jesus liked those who repented sincerely but Jesus rebuked those who wanted to create theirselves as if godly but were are actually full of misguided veils. Jesus rebuked them not because he hated them but he wanted them to be true in their true testimony of life rather than being fake and pretentious. Following Jesus is not always easy because many times we are challenged to keep changing and transforming ourselves. But Jesus constantly wants to remind us that being a person who is liked by God is always much more noble and precious than to be a man who pleases humans but full of deceit and falsehood (folshuud). The Russian proverb once said: “it is better to be slapped by the truth and become conscious, than to be kissed by falsehood and end up being in ever self-deceiving mechanisms. You and I are given a choice. A faithful servant can never serve two masters. Amen.

18 “Si el mundo los odia, sepan[e] que Me ha odiado a Mí antes que a ustedes.
19 Si ustedes fueran del mundo, el mundo amaría lo suyo; pero como no son del mundo, sino que Yo los escogí de entre el mundo, por eso el mundo los odia.
20 Acuérdense de la palabra que Yo les dije: ‘Un siervo no es mayor que su señor.’ Si Me persiguieron a Mí, también los perseguirán a ustedes; si guardaron Mi palabra, también guardarán la de ustedes.
21 Pero todo eso les harán por causa de Mi nombre, porque no conocen a Aquél que Me envió.
Muchas personas están ansiosas por renovar el mundo con tantas ideas brillantes y sofisticadas. Quieren hacer el mundo más justo, mucho mejor y más hermoso. Su intención de construir un mundo más hermoso y más ideal ciertamente no está mal. Pero a veces las personas olvidan que el cambio solo puede ocurrir cuando las personas se dan cuenta de que es Dios quien desea un cambio más positivo en el mundo. Dios creó al hombre para que el hombre con su conciencia moral, el hombre con la conciencia que realmente viene de Dios, también debe buscar y construir el mundo basado en el amor de Dios otorgado a él.
Hoy en su Evangelio, Jesús dice: “Si fueras del mundo, el mundo te amaría como suyo. Pero como no eres del mundo, pero yo te he elegido fuera del mundo, es por eso que el mundo te odia a ti.
“Amar a Jesús a veces significa que tratamos de pensar como Jesús piensa, actúar como Jesús actúa y amar como Jesús ama. El Obispo Robert Baron explicó esto en una reflexión sobre la Cuaresma 2018. Y ser como Jesús a veces no siempre es querido y no es una elección favorita. Durante su vida, Jesús nunca fue una figura favorita de los escribas, fariseos y saduceos. Jesús desafió a veces todo tipo de piedad falsa. Jesús se opuso a toda forma de crimen cubierto con intenciones ocultas. Jesús perdonó los pecados de los pecadores. recaudadores de impuestos, prostitutas, criminal en la cruz. A Jesús le gustaban los que se arrepintieron sinceramente, pero Jesús reprendió a aquellos que querían crearse como si fueran piadosos, pero estaban llenos de velos equivocados. Jesús los reprendió no porque les odiara a ellos, sino porque quería que fueran verdaderos en su testimonio de vida en lugar de ser falsos y pretenciosos. Seguir a Jesús no siempre es fácil porque muchas veces tenemos el desafío de seguir cambiando y ansificándonos a nosotros mismos. Pero Jesús constantemente quiere recordarnos que ser una persona amada por Dios es siempre mucho más noble y preciosa que ser un hombre que agrada a los humanos pero lleno de engaño y falsedad. El proverbio ruso una vez dijo: “es mejor ser abofeteado por la verdad y volverse consciente, que ser besado por la falsedad y terminar siendo un mecanismo engañador. Tú y yo tenemos una opción. Un Siervo fiel nunca puede servir a dos maestros. Amén.
12. Inilah perintah-Ku, yaitu supaya kamu saling mengasihi, seperti Aku telah mengasihi kamu.
13. Tidak ada kasih yang lebih besar dari pada kasih seorang yang memberikan nyawanya untuk sahabat-sahabatnya.
14. Kamu adalah sahabat-Ku, jikalau kamu berbuat apa yang Kuperintahkan kepadamu.
15. Aku tidak menyebut kamu lagi hamba, sebab hamba tidak tahu, apa yang diperbuat oleh tuannya, tetapi Aku menyebut kamu sahabat, karena Aku telah memberitahukan kepada kamu segala sesuatu yang telah Kudengar dari Bapa-Ku.
16. Bukan kamu yang memilih Aku, tetapi Akulah yang memilih kamu. Dan Aku telah menetapkan kamu, supaya kamu pergi dan menghasilkan buah dan buahmu itu tetap, supaya apa yang kamu minta kepada Bapa dalam nama-Ku, diberikan-Nya kepadamu.
17. Inilah perintah-Ku kepadamu: Kasihilah seorang akan yang lain.”
Cintailah satu sama lain sebagaimana aku telah mencintaimu. Tidak ada kasih yang lebih besar daripada kasih seseorang yang memberikan nyawa-Nya bagi saudara-saudaranya. Yesus mencintai kita manusia sampai sehabis-habis-Nya. Cinta-Nya adalah cinta yang tanpa batas, cinta yang mengalir dan terus mengalir dan mengalir sampai keabadian. Banyak rabi dan guru mengajarkan kepada kita tentang ideal cinta tetapi hanya Yesus yang mengajar dengan penuh kekuatan dan kuasa karena dia tidah hanya mengajar tentang cinta. Ia memberikan cinta itu sampai sehabis-habisnya. Ia memberikan cinta sampai terluka. Ia memberikan cinta sampai titik darah penghabisan.
Yesus mengajarkan kepada para murid-Nya dan pengikut-pengikut-Nya bahwa mencintai itu bukan hanya sekadar sebuah perasaan yang kadang-kadang menggebu-gebu namun kadang lemah lesu. Mencintai membutuhkan komitmen yang kuat dan kesetiaan yang berkanjang. Kadang-kadang dalam mencintai orang mesti merasakan sakit. Ada pasangan yang tetap mencintai sekalipun mereka tahu bahwa menyukai pasangan setiap hari, setiap waktu dan setiap menit tentulah mustahil. Namun karena dasarnya adalah cinta Allah, mereka berkanjang untuk setia. Banyak pasangan Katolik yang pernah dikhianati oleh pasangannya namun alih-alih memilih untuk berpisah, mereka memilih untuk menyelesaikan persoalan dan prahara rumah tangga mereka dengan mengandalkan rahmat Allah dan kesetiaan manusiawi mereka yang rapuh. Yesus pernah dikhianati oleh Yudas dan Petrus. Yudas mencari pembenaran diri dengan menyesal dan menggantung diri. Petrus menemukan pembenaran diri dengan bertobat dan memberi diri kepada Yesus sepenuh hati. Dalam banyak hal kita mesti mengakui bahwa kita mau mencintai namun dalam mencintai kadang kita jatuh pada tendensi Petrus. Mau mencintai namun kadang mengkhianati cinta itu sendiri. Mencintai namun tidak sungguh-sungguh, tidak total, setengah-setengah dan suam-suam kuku. Ketika kita menghadapi tantangan ini, marilah kita tetap kita Sabda Sang Mesias: “Tidak ada kasih yang lebih besar dari pada kasih seorang yang memberikan nyawanya untuk sahabat-sahabatnya.”

Jn 15:12-17
This is my commandment: love one another.A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
Jesus said to his disciples: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.”
Love each other as I have loved you. There is no greater love than the love of a man who lays down his life for his brothers. Jesus loves us humans until His death. His love is infinite love, love that flows and keeps flowing and flowing to eternity. Many rabbis and teachers teach us about the ideal of love but only Jesus who teaches with power and integrity because he does not just teach us about love but He also gives his love until the end, to the final point. He gives love us even when it hurts deeply. He gives love to the last drop of his very blood.
Jesus taught His disciples and followers that to love is not merely a feeling that comes and goes, a feeling that can be so strong and passionate but all the sudden becomes weak and fades away. To love requires a strong commitment and enduring faithfulness. Sometimes in loving people must feel pain. There are couples who still love even if they know that loving or let us say to like a partner every day, every time and every minute would be impossible. But because it is based on God’s love, they are persevering to be faithful in loving their spouse. Many Catholic couples have been betrayed by their spouses but instead of choosing to separate, they choose to solve their problems and tempests by relying on God’s grace and their human faithfulness. Jesus was betrayed by Judas and Peter. Judas sought self-justification with regret and suicide himself. Peter found self-justification by repenting and giving himself to Jesus wholeheartedly. In many ways we must recognize that we want to love but in love sometimes we fall on the tendency of betrayal like what Peter did to Jesus. We try to Love loves but we end up betraying love itself. Loving not with a deep deep or not total love, lukewarm love. When we face this challenge, let us keep in mind and heart the Word of the Messiah: “There is no greater love than the love of a man who lays down his life for his friends.”

12 Este es Mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros, así como Yo los he amado.13 Nadie tiene un amor mayor que éste: que uno dé[d] su vida por sus amigos.14 Ustedes son Mis amigos si hacen lo que Yo les mando.15 Ya no los llamo siervos, porque el siervo no sabe lo que hace su señor; pero los he llamado amigos, porque les he dado a conocer todo lo que he oído de Mi Padre.
16 Ustedes no me escogieron a Mí, sino que Yo los escogí a ustedes, y los designé para que vayan y den fruto, y que su fruto permanezca; para que todo lo que pidan al Padre en Mi nombre se lo conceda.17 Esto les mando: que se amen los unos a los otros.
Ámense como yo los he amado. No hay mayor amor que el amor de un hombre que da su vida por sus hermanos. Jesús nos ama a los humanos hasta su muerte. Su amor es amor infinito, amor que fluye y sigue fluyendo y fluyendo a la eternidad.
Muchos rabinos y maestros nos enseñan sobre el ideal del amor, pero solo Jesús que enseña con poder e integridad porque no solo nos enseña sobre el amor, sino que también le da su amor hasta el final, hasta el punto final. Él nos ama incluso cuando duele profundamente. Él nos da amor a la última gota de su misma sangre.
Jesús les enseñó a sus discípulos y seguidores que amar no es simplemente un sentimiento que viene y se va, un sentimiento que puede ser tan fuerte y apasionado, sino que de repente se vuelve débil y se desvanece. Amar requiere un fuerte compromiso y una fidelidad duradera. A veces, al amar, las personas deben sentir dolor. Hay parejas que todavía aman, incluso si saben que amar o digamos que les gusta su marido/a todos los días, cada vez y cada minuto sería imposible. Pero debido a que se basa en el amor de Dios, ellos son perseverantes para ser fieles en amar a su pareja. Muchas parejas católicas han sido traicionadas por sus esposo/a, pero en lugar de elegir separarse, eligen resolver sus problemas y tempestades confiando en la gracia de Dios y su fidelidad humana. Jesús fue traicionado por Judas y Pedro. Judas buscó la autojustificación con arrepentimiento y suicidio. Pedro encontró autojustificación, arrepintiéndose y entregándose a Jesús de todo corazón. En muchos sentidos, debemos reconocer que queremos amar, pero en el amor a veces caemos en la tendencia a la traición, como lo que Pedro le hizo a Jesús. Tratamos de amar a los amores pero terminamos traicionando al amor mism cuando amamos no con un amor profundo ni total, con un amor tibio. Cuando enfrentamos este desafío, tengamos en mente y corazón la Palabra del Mesías: “No hay mayor amor que el amor de un hombre que da su vida por sus amigos”.
We are living in the part of the world that violence and death have become our daily consumption. Every day, people’s lives are forcibly snatched away for unbelievably trivial reasons. Parents kill their babies. Brothers murder their brothers. Friends manipulate and sell their friends. Some of us used to go down on the street and cry for justice. Yet, many of us are just busy with daily pressing concerns like works, study and chores. We become numb or blind to the soil that has been painted red by the blood of our brothers and sisters. The life, precious in the eyes of God, turns out to be cheap at the hands of men.
